“It all started with this little person. My writing journey was inspired by my daughter, Jillian Makanaka.
I wanted to create stories that represent her, allow her to embrace her culture and the world. That path me led to publishing a book and before I knew I started and independent small press.”
Christine Mapondera is the author of Makanaka’s World, a picture book series designed to teach young children about our world cultures, geography, and language in a fun and engaging way. Christine was born in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe, and now resides in Chicago with her two children.
Her writing was initially inspired by her daughter, as she wrote stories for her in Shona, her native language.
Through her company Global Kidz House, Christine now publishes stories that directly address the need for diverse books. She’s driven to create books for children that elevate and celebrate the diversity of Africa and the African diaspora.
She is also co-founder of KidLit Nation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to help educate and provide opportunities for children’s writers and illustrators of color.
