Christine Mapondera-Talley is the author of Makanaka’s World, a picture book series designed to teach young children about our world culture, geography, and language in a fun and engaging way. Christine was born in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe, and now resides in Chicago with her husband and two children. Growing up bilingual and gives Christine a unique perspective to help children learn about the globe.
Her writing was initially inspired by her daughter, as she wrote stories for her in Shona, her native language. Thanks to a little nudge from my husband, today Christine write stories that directly address the need for more authentic voices and diverse books. She’s driven to write books for children that elevate and celebrate the diversity of Africa and African lives.
Christine is also co-founder of KidLit Nation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to help educate and provide opportunities for children’s writers and illustrators of color. Since its inception in July of 2017, KidLit Nation has sponsored fifteen scholarships to a SCBWI regional conference and now hosts a monthly webinar series.
